Working Mum vs SAHM

A little while ago we were contacted by Studio Lambert, about a documentary they are researching for Channel 4 entitled “Should I go back to work”.  If you read our blog regularly, you will know that this is a topic we cover quite extensively and which we try to look at from all perspectives.  We have written and run stories about the debate between being a working Mum and a Stay at home Mum; about how we women should stick together and support other women, no matter what their choices; whether SAHMs are more unhappy about the costs of childcare and the effect that can have on women’s ability to choose to work or stay at home and most recently we have run a series on flexible working options for mothers.

The other evening, I had a long chat with Victoria, from Studio Lambert, about my feelings on the debate and answered questions about my own choices; other people’s perceptions (or perhaps more accurately my perception of other people’s perceptions!); childcare; the joy watching your child develop and/or the disillusion of being trapped at home with a small crying bundle; and all of the key areas of the SAHM vs Working Mum debate.

Victoria is still looking for Mums to interview and particularly those who are still in the process of deciding what to do at the end of their maternity leave; her contact details are at the end of this piece if you would be interested in talking to her.

It was interesting for me to readdress the decisions I had made and attempt to pin down what it was that had made me make the decisions that I have made.  So I thought I would ask you some of the questions that Victoria asked me.  We’d love to hear your take on them.  Feel free to leave your answers as comments on the blog, or if you want to answer them on your own blog then that would be great.  Just don’t forget to leave us a comment with a link to your blog so that we can see all the answers.

How old is your child/children?

What did you do before you went on maternity leave?

How important was work to you before you went on maternity leave?

At what point did you make the decision about whether or not to return to work?

What were the key factors in your decision?

If you have returned to work, how did you chose childcare?

If you are a SAHM was childcare a factor in your choice and was this on a practical or ideological level?

Have you ever felt that the choice you have made was judged negatively by others and if so in what way?

Do you regret the choices you made/were forced to make  in any way?

Is working part-time a good compromise or a way of trying (and potentially failing) to have-it-all?

How has/will motherhood affect your career?

We look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Channel 4 – Should I Go Back to Work?

Channel 4 are looking for mothers for a new series.  We’d love to talk to women about their decision to go back to work or not, after having children. If you are close to finishing your maternity leave and you haven’t yet decided whether to return to work, if you are a stay at home mum, or if you’ve thrown yourself back into full-time work, we’d love to hear from you. We’re interested in finding out what factors have affected your decision, what it is like to be a working mum/SAHM and understand more about whether there is in fact a choice.  If you would like to know more, please email: Victoria.Balfour@studiolambert.com or call 0207 534 2027.
